Holiday Reminders for Sanity & Support

In the next few weeks, you will be exchanging a lot of words with family, friends, acquaintances, and even strangers. These instances offer a chance to share your time, opinions, and stories with others. Before it all begins, let's get a safety plan in place. 
 
Three Holiday Reminders for Sanity & Support: 
 
1. Only you can choose how much energy you want to contribute to the discussions around you.
 
Holidays bring out the "social" in extroverts. You may find yourself pleasantly chatting it up and seamlessly bonding with your fellow humans. But maybe you're an introvert, and you're worried about getting enough "me" time. Don't forget--your energy output isn't dictated by others. It's managed by you. Take control and don't apologize for meeting your own needs for quiet, rest, or solitude.
 
2. Your words have tremendous power. 
 
At any moment, you can destroy yourself or another by forgetting the power of your words. They can be like bullets that pierce the heart and evoke a lifetime of suffering. When you place your attention on including others, listening to them, and offering reassurance, it can be life-affirming for both of you. Verbalizing your respect in a card or in person may be one of the greatest gifts you can give.
 
3. Have a plan and exit strategy for when you're "filled up" energetically. 
 
Who drains your energy? Who restores you? What food or drinks enliven or weaken you? What scenes are intolerable? What places do you find calming? Are you managing holiday traffic? Consider setting a limit on the amount of "venting" you will do and have a moratorium on certain swear words until after the new year.  
 
We each have an opportunity to share in the joy the holidays can provide. Remember to let the little things slide. It's not life or death if something doesn't get done the way you think it should, or someone's behavior is irritating you. Choose to rise above, if even for the next few weeks.
 

In the end, we are responsible for keeping ourselves in check when it comes to saying what we want to say, not regretting what we did say, and taking good care of ourselves. Make this holiday a practice in peace and vigilance.
